The BETRAYAL…

…OF INTIMACY.

Insignificance also stars Gary Busey, Will Sampson and Tony Curtis.

IN A ROOM IN LONDON’S OXFORD STREET IAN PENMAN TALKS TO NIC ROEG… Each has their theme, and every one of them waits for — and secretly wills — its moment of dismantling. And then? The door opens.

Remember? It used to be such intimacy. I could easily fall for you, and that falling brought out such… “No, not a troubled chord, but a chord, a chord that has no qualification to it, has no question of questioning, just… a mutual chord.”

But then…

What is the “our” of intimacy? Do we want to fall here? Why do we want to forget the definition we usually apply? Do we want to lie in our deepest intimacies?

Intimacy is a form of forgetfulness: that is the only reason it always surprises us so. It is the intimacy of betrayal that always kills love.

“That’s so, yes, I think that what I have just committed myself to saying, it could be construed as betraying, a saying through betraying… I mean, we had a good time and I guess in the essence of things… I was fooled.”

So, intimacy is…?

“Well, this would have to be off the record of course…”

The scales fall from your eyes: forfeit of balance, you fall silent, there is simply nothing to say. “I mean, what is the root of that? …how many lovers have terrible words for each other? Most lovers have, you know, Hello ratbag…”

Madness and rage are easy to re-enact; not so intimacy, which is not blind. Intimacy is somewhere between surveillance and insouciance. Intimacy is difficult, because it is open-eyed — but just the right width, the white in the night — allowing oneself to be caught, what is otherwise behind closed doors, offguard, of the instant, out of nowhere, unasked. Intimacy is prattle.

What happens, intimately?

“You’re young, you’ve had love affairs, but in twenty years time you’ll find a letter, from twenty years ago, and you’ll hide it and wonder whether to keep it or not, you’ll weigh the balance of whether you should burn it — for your new love — or whether that love was as big as the previous love and… Should you keep it? hide it? run the risk of Why the hell have you kept that? and maybe in a cavalier moment you tear it up and then think… that’s gone.”

The lover must read everything intimately. The lover must act, in time. Seen through hindsight, the prattle falls like pain… intimate. It all makes sense.

And then, in time, it all begins again? However long a time may pass, according to the laws governing the combinations of this eternal play of repetition, all configurations that have previously existed on this earth must yet meet, attract, and corrupt each other again? Would you say yes to that?

“Yes. Absolutely. I think Heine is right:… we’ll meet again.”
