ACT ‘Snobbery And Decay’ (ZTT) The return of Claudia Brucken from Propaganda, together with Thomas Leer who, along with his solo work and work for others, produced the classy ‘International’ from 1984. This has echoes of the Pet Shop Boys’ ‘Opportunities’; all synths and dramatically whispered verses attacking modern society and all that. Very 1982, and though Leer’s voice is always worth a listen, this is sub-standard Heaven 17 complete with some electronic brass to make it a bit, you know, funky. Featuring pictures of Liberace and Quentin Crisp (on the seven inch only), the arty ZTT packaging, which three years ago was a good joke, is just plain embarrassing now. Don’t they know that popular music is no longer on art form but merely there to accompany Jane Fonda workout classes?
